My first full-length book, Nerve, is coming out in April 2020. It combines a personal narrative about my relationship to fear with a look at the science of how fear works in our brains and our bodies – how fear can challenge and limit us, and why we need it in our lives nonetheless.
Wired magazine calls it a must-read book for spring! Says reviewer Kate Knibbs: “Nerve is brave and tender, and an example of why journalists treating themselves as guinea pigs should never completely go out of style.” Elsewhere, it has also been warmly reviewed by Kirkus and Quill & Quire, and featured in CBC’s spring books preview.
It’s available from Allen Lane in Canada, the UK, and India; from Pantera Press in Australia and New Zealand; and from The Experiment in the United States. (It goes by Nerve: A Personal Journey Through the Science of Fear in the British Commonwealth, and by Nerve: Adventures in the Science of Fear in the USA.)
I will have lots more info to come about Nerve events/tour stops, so stay tuned!
I have also published a very short e-book, an Amazon Kindle Single: Mussolini’s Arctic Airship. It tells the true story of a disastrous polar expedition and the survival saga, and rescue attempts, that followed.
You can find my stories anthologized in The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2019, The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2018, Best Canadian Sports Writing, and The Best Women’s Travel Writing, Volume 10.
