I’m thrilled to have a short feature in the January issue of Smithsonian Magazine. It’s about dinosaurs, and what a visit to Alberta can teach us about their extinction.
The reporting trip for this story offered a quasi-fulfilment of my childhood dream of becoming a paleontologist. A lot of the field work I tagged along on got cut from the story, but here’s a shot of me helping to wrap newly uncovered fossils in plaster-and-burlap jackets for transport to the lab:

I got home earlier this week from an incredible assignment: a Galapagos cruise with Lindblad Expeditions. I’d heard big things about the islands, and they lived up to the hype. I’ll be writing more about the trip soon – in the meantime, here’s a photo I took of a group of Nazca boobies (cousins of the famous blue-footed boobies) at sunset.
I’ve been home for less than 72 hours, but tomorrow I’m off again, to Anchorage and then the Aleutians, on a three-week reporting trip. I’ll get back to Whitehorse in early May, just in time for the Yukon summer to get rolling.

This is the Bell II Lodge, my home base for a reporting trip down the Stewart-Cassiar Highway into northwestern B.C. a couple weeks back. It was an amazing spot, and I can’t wait for the story to come out in the next issue of Up Here at the end of this month.

2011 was a busy travel year for me – at least, for the first three seasons. I’ve been more or less grounded through the fall, but these seven photos represent my winter, spring and summer travels. Looking forward to more in 2012!

Since my last update I’ve traveled from Seattle to the Olympic Peninsula and along the Oregon and California coasts. It’s mostly been a national/state parks camping trip, with urban breaks in San Francisco and Los Angeles, my southernmost stop. I’m in Las Vegas now, looking forward to a loop through southern Utah before I head north towards home.

Bad news first: My participation in the AOL/Ford road trip project fell apart at the last minute. It’s a complicated story, but essentially there was an issue with work visas, immigration regulations, and my being Canadian. So the show goes on without me.
The good news is, since I had already packed up my things and sublet my apartment anyway, I decided to just drive south on a road trip of indeterminate itinerary and uncertain duration. I’m here in Vancouver now after a five-day trip through northern B.C., just in time for the TBEX travel blogging conference. From here, I plan to tool around the Pacific Northwest, maybe the Rocky Mountains, maybe head south to northern California. It’s all up in the air.
I’ll also be attending the Oxford American Summit for Ambitious Writers in Arkansas in late June, which I’m unbelievably excited about. I’ll be a student in the nonfiction stream; faculty includes Pico Iyer and David Remnick, and a host of other fantastic long-form magazine writers.
