I arrived home in Whitehorse last night after a successful trip into Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve — I was a volunteer at Slaven’s Roadhouse, a remote dog drop location on the Yukon Quest trail. Photos and more coming soon, in the meantime I’ll just note that using an outhouse at -50 (a new experience for me) wasn’t nearly as painful as I’d expected.
Slaven’s sounds amazing and so does the week’s work. Imagine you’ll get some pretty amazing pix too.
Will watch for your next post. In the meantime, enjoy yakking with the mushers and their dogs.
Thanks! I did get some pretty good pictures, although gosh it’s hard to operate a camera in that kind of cold. Who knew lithium ion batteries could freeze so fast?
Eva, you were such a great sport! Every one of us with the NPS crew were beyond impressed with you! You were meant to come and observe, and we were to cater to your every need, but you were having none of that. You jumped right in with unbridled enthusiasm and had the time of your life helping with all of the chores, like dipping water from the Yukon River at -45 F. It was such a pleasure spending time with you and getting to now you, and we can’t wait to read your story when it comes out. Please keep us posted!

Thanks, Christy!! I had a blast – it was great meeting all of you. I’ll definitely be in touch.
